Reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment systems are industrial assets typically designed for a service life of over ten years. However, their actual longevity is highly dependent on two factors: the operating environment and regular human maintenance.

The environment can be divided into two aspects: the plant (or equipment room) conditions and the feed water quality.
For the plant, the equipment should be placed in a well‑ventilated, dry area, protected from direct sunlight, and free from corrosive gases above acceptable limits.
For the feed water, temperature is the critical parameter. The optimal feed water temperature range is 15–35 °C, with the ideal operation point being 20–25 °C. The absolute maximum continuous operating temperature is 45 °C. Temperatures below 10 °C will significantly reduce permeate flow, while prolonged exposure to temperatures above 40 °C accelerates membrane hydrolysis and aging, permanently shortening membrane life.
Even though pre‑treatment filters (e.g., multimedia filters, activated carbon filters) are often equipped with automatic backwashing functions, the filter media themselves have a finite capacity. Sand, anthracite, and activated carbon gradually become saturated with trapped contaminants. If not replaced on schedule, they not only lose their filtration efficiency but can also release accumulated pollutants back into the water stream, adding an extra burden to the downstream RO membranes. This can lead to premature fouling and a decline in system performance.
To maximize equipment life, it is essential to strictly follow the manufacturer’s recommended replacement schedules for all pre‑treatment media, cartridge filters, and, when necessary, the RO membranes themselves. Daily operational logs (pressure, flow, conductivity) are also helpful for early fault detection.
Do not underestimate the importance of daily maintenance. Neglect can have severe and often irreversible consequences. For example, chlorine breakthrough from exhausted activated carbon will oxidize and permanently damage the polyamide RO membrane. Hard scaling (e.g., calcium sulfate) can clog the membrane elements and cause the high‑pressure pump to run under excessive backpressure, potentially damaging the pump itself. In such cases, simply replacing the old membranes with new ones is not enough – the entire piping system, valves, and pressure vessels must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before restarting, otherwise the new membranes will quickly become re‑contaminated.
By maintaining proper environmental conditions and adhering to a disciplined maintenance routine, you can ensure your RO system operates reliably for its full design life and beyond.
